About
Hi! I'm Marten, the creator of jiujitsunearme.org - a comprehensive directory of jiu jitsu gyms across the United States! ๐ฅ
Why I built this
When I moved to a new city and needed to find a jiu jitsu gym, I found myself drowning in tabs - dozens of outdated websites, conflicting Google reviews, and incomplete information. Finding gyms that matched my training style and budget turned into a research project. The process was unnecessarily frustrating and time-consuming, especially for beginners. I figured others in the BJJ community faced the same challenges, so I decided to solve this problem!
What I built
I've created a searchable directory that currently includes data on over 15,500 martial arts establishments across the US, with a focus on authentic BJJ training locations:
Location-based search - Find gyms near you quickly with geographic search
Comprehensive profiles - Reviews, pricing info, instructor details, and available programs
BJJ-specific filters - Easily find gyms that offer gi/no-gi training, comp teams, or beginner programs
Mobile-friendly design - Perfect for finding gyms while on the go
How it works
The initial dataset comes from aggregating public information from Google reviews, gym websites, and other public sources. I'm continuously refining the data quality based on community feedback to ensure we're showcasing legitimate BJJ establishments.
What's next
This is very much a beta release, and I'm actively improving based on feedback from the BJJ community:
Adding missing gyms (let me know if yours isn't listed!)
Refining search functionality
Implementing user contributions for more accurate data
Building features for drop-in information and mat fee details
I'd love to hear what you think and what features would make this more useful for you! OSS! ๐ฅ
